# Google AI Overview

> See which tracked keywords show a Google AI Overview, whether it cites your site, and who it cites instead.

## Overview

An **AI Overview** is the AI-written summary Google shows above the organic results for many searches. It answers the question on the results page and links to a handful of pages it drew on. When an overview appears for a keyword you rank for, it takes many of the clicks, so being one of its cited pages matters as much as your position below it.

The **Google AI Overview** page shows, for each tracked keyword, whether Google showed an AI Overview, whether it cited one of your pages, and which domains it cites instead of you.

It lives under **AI Search → Google AI Overview** at `app.trysight.ai/visibility/ai-overview`.

<Note>
Included from **Pro**. The page reads your tracked keywords, so the site needs keywords tracked under **Keywords** before it has anything to show.
</Note>

## Where the data comes from

AI Overview data comes from the **keyword rank checks** you already run. No extra credits are spent.

Every time Sight AI checks a tracked keyword's Google position, it also records:

* whether an AI Overview was on the results page,
* whether that overview linked to one of your pages,
* every page the overview drew on, in the order the overview lists them.

So the page updates whenever rank checks run: on your plan's keyword tracking schedule (every three days on Pro and Business) and whenever you run a rank check yourself, including **Run check** on this page.

Each keyword is compared with its previous rank check, so a keyword needs at least two checks before it can show a change.

## Running a check

**Run check** queues a rank check for the site's tracked keywords. AI Overview results update as keywords are checked. The **Checked** stamp beside the button shows when the last rank check finished.

Because it is the same check as the **Keyword positions** refresh, it shares that refresh's cooldown: Pro can run it again 6 hours after the last run, Business after 2 hours, Enterprise after 1 hour. Inside that window the button tells you when the next run can start. Scheduled checks keep running meanwhile.

## What the page shows

The header reads "AI Overview on X of Y checked keywords".

### Summary tiles

| Tile | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Citation rate** | Of the keywords whose latest check showed an AI Overview, the share where the overview cites one of your pages. The rate at the previous check sits underneath. |
| **Searches at stake** | The monthly search volume of the keywords whose overview cites other sites and not you. |
| **Newly cited** | Keywords whose overview cites you now and did not at the previous check. |
| **Lost citations** | Keywords whose overview still shows but stopped citing you. |

### Keywords table

One row per tracked keyword. The default filter is **With AI Overview**; switch to **All keywords** to see every tracked keyword.

| Column | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Keyword** | The keyword. Under it, how many sources the overview cites, and for keywords you are not cited on, the first domains it cites. |
| **Volume** | Monthly Google searches for the keyword. |
| **Rank** | Your Google organic position on the latest check. |
| **Status** | **Cited** with your position among the overview's sources, **Not cited**, **No overview** (Google showed no AI Overview on the latest check) or **Not checked** (no rank check has recorded AI Overview data yet). A **new** or **lost** badge marks a change since the previous check. |
| **Cover it** | On keywords with an overview that does not cite you: opens the agent to write content that answers the search. |

Filter by status (With AI Overview, Cited, Not cited, Newly cited, Lost citation, No overview, Not checked, All keywords) or search by keyword or source domain. The **CSV** button downloads every row that matches the current search and filters.

A keyword counts as **cited** when the overview links to one of your pages. The citation position is where your first page sits among the overview's sources.

### Keyword details

Click a keyword to open it. The panel shows the status, the check date, your organic rank, and:

* **Your pages it cites** when you are cited.
* **Sources the overview cites**: every page in the overview's order, with a **You** badge on your own pages.
* **Write content for this keyword** on keywords you are not cited on, which opens the agent, and **Open in Keywords** to jump to the keyword on the Keywords page.

### Cited instead of you

Lists the domains the overviews cite on the keywords where they do not cite you: how many of those keywords each domain appears on, and the monthly searches behind them. Hover a domain to see how many of its pages are cited.

### Clicks AI Overviews take

The Search Console side of the same story: queries that held their Google position over the last 28 days but lost clicks, which is the signature of an overview answering above the links. The card shows the estimated clicks lost and the five biggest queries, and links to the full [Google AI Search](/ai-visibility/google-ai-search) report.

It needs a connected [Google Search Console](/integrations/google-search-console) property and about 14 days of Search Console history.

## Trends

Every keyword is compared with its previous rank check:

* **new**: the overview cites you now and did not before.
* **lost**: the overview still shows but no longer cites you.

An overview that stopped appearing is not counted as a loss. Overviews come and go between checks, and a keyword without an overview has nothing to cite.

## The "AI Overview citation lost" alert

When a rank check finds that an overview that cited you at the previous check still shows but no longer cites you, Sight AI records an **AI Overview citation lost** alert (`ai_overview_lost`). It names the keywords and links back to this page.

Like every SEO alert rule, it starts off. Turn it on, and choose email, Slack or a webhook, under **Settings → Site → SEO Alerts**. SEO alerts are included from **Business**. See [SEO Alerts](/seo/alerts).
