# Keyword Research

> Look up any keyword: search volume, difficulty, page one, traffic potential, People also ask, the AI Overview, keyword ideas and where your site stands, with the monthly lookup quota per plan.

## Overview

**Keywords → Keyword research** (`/keywords/research`) answers one question at a time: is this keyword worth a page, and what would it take? Type a keyword and you get its market numbers, who holds page one, what the number one page earns, the questions people ask, whether Google shows an AI Overview, four lists of related ideas, and where the selected site stands today. From there you can track the keyword, file it in a list, or hand it to the agent.

<Note>
  Basic keyword research is included from Starter: the keyword overview (volume, difficulty, page one, People also ask, AI Overview, **Also rank for**) and the **Also searched** ideas. Advanced research starts on Pro and adds the **Terms match** and **Questions** lists and **Find more questions**. On Starter those two lists are not available; the overview and **Also searched** still work.
</Note>

## Searching

Before a search the page is a single search card. Press **/** anywhere on the page to focus it. A keyword is 2 to 80 characters; it is trimmed and lowercased before the lookup. As you type, the box suggests your recent searches and keywords already in your list. If you type a domain instead of a keyword, the page points you to **Explore** in the SEO Suite, which is built for domains.

Under the card, two tabs: **Keyword lists**, the lists on your Keywords page with a **New list** button, and **History**, every keyword looked up for this site. Reopening a keyword from history costs nothing.

## Lookups, quota and cache

Research data is bought per keyword and cached for 30 days per site, country and language, so reopening a keyword, or opening one that already sits in a fresh list, is free. Fresh fetches count against a monthly quota per team:

| Plan | Research lookups per month |
| - | - |
| Starter | 50 |
| Pro | 300 |
| Business | 1,000 |

One lookup is one fresh list or one fresh set of metrics. Opening a new keyword fetches its metrics (unless a recent list already holds them), its **Terms match** list and its **Also searched** list, so up to three lookups; **Find more questions** is one more. Cached results never count. When the quota is spent, the page says so and names the next plan's allowance. It resets on the first of the month (UTC).

Two daily limits also apply per site. Page one data (the live Google results behind **Page one**, **People also ask**, **AI Overview**, **Traffic potential** and **Also rank for**) is fetched for up to 20 new keywords a day, shared with Explore; after that those parts read "You have opened 20 new keywords today. Page one data for new keywords resumes at 00:00 UTC." And the site's daily cap on fresh keyword data pauses everything new with "Fresh keyword data for this site is paused until 00:00 UTC. Keywords you opened before still load."

## The keyword overview

### Header

The keyword with its intent chips and a brand chip when it carries a brand name, "Updated 3 days ago" with a refresh icon, then a verdict badge and one line explaining it:

| Verdict | When you see it |
| - | - |
| **You hold this** | You rank in the top three. Keep the page fresh. |
| **Within reach** | You rank between 4 and 20. A better page can lift you into the top three, or from page two onto page one. |
| **Not enough data** | Google has no volume or difficulty for this exact phrase. |
| **Little demand** | Fewer than 20 searches a month. Cover it inside a broader page. |
| **A competitor's brand** | People searching this want that competitor. Only a comparison or alternatives page has a real chance. |
| **Go for it** | Easy or Medium difficulty (or unknown) with real demand. |
| **Worth a strong page** | Hard difficulty. Plan for links. |
| **Long game** | Very hard. Big brands hold page one; start with a longer variant. |

The primary button is **Write with the agent**, **Improve the article** when one exists, or **Track in AI answers** when you already rank but AI answers are not checked. Beside it: **Track** (or **Open in Keywords** once tracked), **Add to list**, the AI action, and a **More** menu with **Copy for AI** (the overview as Markdown), **Open on Google** and **Refresh data**.

### Tiles

* **Difficulty**: the KD gauge, its advice line, and the average referring domains of the top 10.
* **Search volume**: monthly searches, a 12-month sparkline, the change against last year, CPC and ad competition.
* **Traffic potential**: estimated monthly visits to the number one page from every keyword it ranks for, what that traffic would cost as ads, and the parent topic (a broader keyword one page can rank for alongside this one).
* **You**: your position and ranking page, **Not in the top 100**, or **Not checked yet**, plus what the intent means for the page you would build.

Under the tiles, **Google shows:** lists the features on the results page, such as AI Overview, People also ask, Featured snippet, Videos or Ads, each with a tooltip on what it means for you.

### Keyword ideas

Four lists, eight rows each, with **View all** to open the full table:

| List | What it holds | Included from |
| - | - | - |
| **Terms match** | Searches that contain your keyword, by volume. | Pro |
| **Questions** | The questions among the matching terms. **Find more questions** runs a dedicated question search when there are fewer than three. | Pro |
| **Also rank for** | Other keywords the number one page ranks for. Cover them on the same page. | Starter |
| **Also searched** | What people also search for around the topic. | Starter |

Each row shows the keyword, intent, KD, volume and your position, with **Write with the agent** and **Track** on hover. The full table adds the usual filters, a row of common words to narrow the list with one click, **Track N**, **Add N to list** and **Copy** for a selection, and **CSV** and **Copy for AI** exports. Switch lists with the tabs at the top of the table and use **Back to overview** to return.

### Page one, People also ask and AI Overview

**Page one** lists the ten results with each one's type (guide, listicle, product page and so on) and a one-line read such as "7 of 10 are listicles. A best-of list fits this keyword." **Check page one strength** measures the ten results (domain rank, referring domains and traffic) and keeps the numbers for 7 days.

**People also ask** shows up to eight questions. Click one to research it, or use **Write with these as sections**, which copies the questions and opens the agent.

**AI Overview** says whether Google shows an AI Overview for the keyword and which sites it cites, with a **You** badge when yours is one of them. **Cover the AI gap** (or **Track in AI answers**) tracks the keyword and opens the Track in AI dialog on the Keywords page.

The last card reminds you that a tracked keyword is checked on your plan's cadence and links to its 90-day history on the Keywords page.

## Adding keywords to your workspace

**Track** adds the keyword to the Keywords page with its volume and difficulty, puts it in your tracking pool while there is room, and queues the first position check. **Add to list** does the same and files it in a list; **New list** creates one on the spot. From a full list you can track up to 100 keywords at once. Keywords already in your list show an **In list** badge.

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Which country and language does research use?">
    The site's, inferred from its domain and your content language, or whatever is chosen under **SEO Suite → Overview → Location**. Results are cached per country and language, so changing the location fetches fresh data.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why does a list say no terms contain my keyword?">
    Terms match only returns searches that include the exact phrase. Try a shorter phrase (the page offers one) or open **Also searched**, which is built on meaning rather than wording.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Does Refresh data cost a lookup?">
    Yes. It refetches the keyword's metrics, page one and the number one page's data and counts like a new keyword. Reopening a cached keyword is free.
