# Keywords Overview

> The five Keywords pages, the pooled tracking allowance and check cadence per plan, country and language, refresh limits, and how a new site gets its first keywords.

## Overview

The Keywords module is where you choose the Google searches your site goes after and follow how it does on them. It lives under **Keywords** in the main menu and has five pages. Every page works on the site selected in the site switcher.

| Page | Menu label | URL | What it is for | Included from |
| - | - | - | - | - |
| [Keywords](/keywords/position-tracking) | **Keywords** | `/keywords` | The keywords you track, with Google position, Search Console clicks, AI citations, article status and an opportunity score. | Starter |
| [Organic keywords](/keywords/organic-keywords) | **Organic keywords** | `/keywords/organic` | Everything the site already ranks for on Google, with the page that ranks and the traffic it brings. | Pro |
| [Keyword lists](/keywords/keyword-lists) | **Keyword lists** | `/keywords/lists` | Group tracked keywords into lists, and see suggested topics one article can cover. | Pro |
| [Keyword research](/keywords/keyword-research) | **Keyword research** | `/keywords/research` | Look up any keyword: volume, difficulty, page one, ideas and where the site stands. | Starter (basic), Pro (advanced) |
| [Competitor keywords](/keywords/competitor-keywords) | **Competitor keywords** | `/keywords/competitors` | What up to ten competitors rank for that you do not, scored into articles to write. | Pro |

<Note>
  Keyword position tracking and basic keyword research are on every plan. Organic keywords, keyword lists, competitor keywords and advanced research start on Pro. A page your plan does not include shows an "Included on Pro" card with an upgrade button in place of its data. See [Choosing your plan](/billing/choosing-your-plan).

## What every keyword table shares

The keyword tables on these pages use one set of columns, so a keyword reads the same wherever you meet it.

| Column | Meaning |
| - | - |
| **Keyword** | The search phrase. Click it to open the keyword overview on Keyword research. An **In list** badge means the keyword is already tracked on the Keywords page; an **Article** badge means Sight has an article for it; a brand chip marks your own or a competitor's brand name. |
| **Intent** | What the searcher wants: **I** informational (learn), **N** navigational (find a site), **C** commercial (compare options), **T** transactional (ready to buy). A keyword can carry up to three. |
| **KD** | Keyword difficulty from 0 to 100, how hard it is to reach the top 10. Easy is 0 to 29 (green), Medium 30 to 49 (yellow), Hard 50 to 69 (orange), Very hard 70 to 100 (red). "Not checked" means Sight has not priced the keyword yet. |
| **Volume** | Average monthly Google searches in the site's country. |
| **Trend** | Searches over the last 12 months as a sparkline, with the change against the year before. |
| **CPC** | What advertisers pay per click in Google Ads. Hidden by default; turn it on from the **Columns** menu. |
| **You** | Where the site ranks on Google at the last check, "Not in top 100", or "Not checked". |

Each row has an **Actions** menu: **Write with the agent** (or **Improve the article** when one exists), **Track**, **Add to list**, **Open overview** and **Copy keyword**. Select rows to get **Track**, **Add to list** and **Copy** for the whole selection, up to 100 keywords at a time. The toolbar has a search box, **Difficulty**, **Intent**, **Volume**, **Show** (with **Hide brands**), **Words** (include and exclude words) and **Presets** (**Quick wins**, **Buyer keywords**, and presets you save), plus **CSV** and **Copy for AI** exports of every row that matches the current filters.

## Your tracking allowance

Position tracking draws from one pool of keywords shared by every site on your team. Each keyword in the pool is checked on your plan's cadence.

| Plan | Tracked keywords (pooled across sites) | Each keyword checked |
| - | - | - |
| Starter | 200 | Weekly |
| Pro | 1,000 | Every 3 days |
| Business | 2,500 | Every 3 days |

The Keywords page shows the pool line under its toolbar: "Tracking 412 of 1,000 keywords across your sites, each checked every 3 days." Sight checks a slice of each site's pool every day, longest-unchecked first, so every keyword comes round on schedule and the work is spread evenly. A keyword you have just added is checked right away.

New keywords join the pool automatically while there is room. When the pool is full, new keywords still land in your list with their volume and difficulty, marked **not tracked** in the Google column; they keep their data but are not checked. Select keywords and use **Track** or **Untrack** in the bulk bar to decide which ones hold a place. Untracking keeps the keyword and its history; it only stops the checks.

If you move to a plan with a smaller pool, the keywords tracked most recently stop being checked until you are back inside the pool. Nothing is deleted. Enterprise plans are not pooled: each site's keywords are checked daily, up to the site's own cap.

## Country and language

Every keyword number (positions, Google AI Mode, research and the organic list) is pulled for one country and language per site. Sight infers both when a site is added: the country from the domain ending (`.co.uk` is the United Kingdom, `.de` is Germany, `.com.au` is Australia, and so on, with `.com` and similar read as the United States), and the language from your team's content language. A Spanish-language team on a `.com` is placed in Spain.

To change it, open **SEO Suite → Overview** and click the **Location** button in the header. The popover, "Where Google is checked", has a **Country** and a **Language** select and shows whether the current value is **inferred** or **chosen**. **Save** applies it to every SEO page for the site; **Reset** goes back to the inferred default. One keyword can also be checked somewhere else, or on mobile: open it on the Keywords page and set **Device**, **Country** and **Language** under **Tracking**.

## Refreshing on demand

Scheduled checks run on their own. The SEO pages also have **Refresh** or **Check positions** buttons for an immediate run. For keyword positions, backlinks, Google AI Mode, competitor pages and link prospects, a manual run waits for a gap after the last run, manual or scheduled:

| Plan | Minimum gap between manual refreshes |
| - | - |
| Starter | 24 hours |
| Pro | 6 hours |
| Business | 2 hours |
| Enterprise | 1 hour |

Each of those kinds has its own clock. Clicking too soon shows how long is left, for example "Keyword positions were refreshed about 3 hours ago. Pro can refresh again every 6 hours; the next one is in about 3 hours. Scheduled checks keep running meanwhile." Checking keywords you have just added never waits.

Two other limits protect your data budget. Competitor keywords reuse any competitor fetched in the last 24 hours instead of pulling it again, and research results are cached for 30 days. And every site has a daily cap on fresh keyword data; when it is reached, pages say "Fresh keyword data for this site is paused until 00:00 UTC. Keywords you opened before still load."

## How a new site gets its first keywords

A new site should open to data, so Sight builds a first snapshot on its own. The run starts right after a site is added and configured, again when Google Search Console finishes its first sync, and when a plan change brings the Keywords module to a team. It only seeds keywords while the site has none at all, so it never overwrites a list you have built.

* **Pro and Business**: Sight pulls the site's organic keyword list, then starts tracking the top 50 organic keywords by estimated traffic, with their volume and difficulty already filled in.
* **Starter**: once Google Search Console has synced, Sight starts tracking the site's top Search Console queries of the last 90 days by clicks. Connect Search Console during setup to get this; see [Google Search Console](/integrations/google-search-console).

The seeded keywords join the tracking pool and get their first position check immediately. The same run also kicks off the first runs of the other SEO jobs your plan includes, such as history, backlinks, the competitor comparison and the site audit.

You can run the same seeding by hand at any time from the Keywords page: **Add keywords → Import from Search Console** or **Import organic keywords**, each taking the top 50, or the **Track top Search Console queries** and **Track top organic keywords** buttons shown while the list is empty. Keywords already in your list are skipped.

## Where tracked keywords come from

* Pasted on the Keywords page, one per line or comma separated.
* Imported from Search Console or the organic list, as above.
* **Track** on any row of Organic keywords, Keyword research or Competitor keywords, with the metrics carried over.
* **Track all** on a suggested article on Competitor keywords.
* Added by the agent, or through the API and MCP tools, which follow the same rules.

## Frequently asked questions

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="Do position checks, research lookups and competitor pulls use AI credits?">
    No. They count against the allowances on this page (the tracking pool, the refresh gaps, the monthly research lookups and the daily data cap), not against your AI credits. Tracking a keyword in AI answers creates tracked prompts, which are checked like any other prompt.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Why does a keyword say not tracked?">
    The pool was full when it was added, so it sits in your list with its data but without position checks. Untrack a keyword you need less, or upgrade for a bigger pool, then select it and click **Track**.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="Can I track mobile positions?">
    Yes, per keyword. Open the keyword on the Keywords page and set **Device** to **Mobile** under **Tracking**. The next scheduled check uses it. Site-wide checks run on desktop.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="What happens to my keywords if I downgrade?">
    They all stay in your list with their history. The most recently tracked keywords over the new pool stop being checked; the rest carry on. Pages your new plan does not include show the upgrade card until you return.
